Quick checklist

- Every doorway and hall width along the delivery path
- Window, vent, and outlet locations on a simple sketch
- Clearance for chairs, drawers, and reclining seats
- Photos of the room and entry points on your phone
Tools that work well
A steel tape measure, pencil, and paper are enough for most rooms. For large spaces, a helper holding the tape keeps readings straight. Note each measurement in inches, then label the wall it belongs to on your sketch.
Map the delivery path first
Measure the front door, interior doors, stair landings, and any tight turns between the street and the room. Record height and width at the narrowest point. If a sofa or headboard cannot clear a turn, we can suggest a different size or split-base option before you buy.
Living room and family room
Mark where the TV, fireplace, or main window sits. Allow 30 to 36 inches for main walkways. For sofas and sectionals, leave space for reclining backs and extended ottomans. A coffee table should sit about 18 inches from the sofa edge so legs and trays stay comfortable.

Dining room tables and chairs
Measure the room, then subtract about 36 inches on each side where chairs slide out. A 42-inch-wide table needs roughly 114 inches of room width when chairs are in use. Add 12 to 18 inches beyond the table edge for a buffet or china cabinet without blocking chair movement.
Bedroom furniture
Record bed wall length and the space on both sides for nightstands and lamps. Dresser drawers need room to open fully without hitting the bed or door swing. For tall pieces, check ceiling height and any ceiling fan blades in the path.
Common questions
How much space should I leave around a dining table? Plan at least 36 inches from the table edge to the wall or other furniture so guests can pull chairs out easily.
Should I measure with area rugs in place? Yes if the rug will stay. Measure to the rug edge when you want furniture legs on the rug, or to the bare floor if pieces will sit beside it.
What should I bring to the showroom? Your sketch, doorway notes, and photos. Our team uses them alongside our Design Services to narrow options quickly.
